The UIC Participates in Queer Science Day to Promote LGBTQ+ Representation in STEM
On Saturday, November 15th, 2025, UIC staff member Laurel Schuck represented the UIC at Queer Science Day, an event that brings local high schoolers to the UMN for a day of hands-on experiments, demos, and community building.
The UMN Queer Science team works to increase visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists and to inspire queer and transgender youth to pursue STEM in an inclusive and affirming environment. In alignment with this mission, UIC staff Laurel Schuck engaged students with an interactive presentation showcasing their diverse responsibilities as a scientist in a core facility.
Other workshops included insect identification with hands-on laboratory activities, an exploration of the biology of sex and gender, the extraction of limonene from orange peels, dynamic chemistry demonstrations, and a concluding session featuring ice cream prepared with liquid nitrogen.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Queer Science team for including UIC in this outstanding outreach initiative.
