Sean Elliott, MD, MS, FACS, Elected into the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons

Sean Elliott, MD, MS, FACS, Professor and Director of Reconstructive Urology at the University of Minnesota Department of Urology, was elected to active membership in the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS). 

Dating back to 1887, the AAGUS is an association of leading academic urologists from the United States, Canada, and around the world, dedicated to the study of diseases of the genitourinary system. Active membership is invite-only and limited at any one time to just 75 physicians (out of more than 10,000 urologists in the United States alone), making election to the organization a significant honor. 

Dr. Elliott is an internationally recognized leader in genitourinary reconstructive surgery, with clinical and research expertise focused on urethral stricture disease, neurogenic bladder and urinary diversion. He has led and participated in multiple clinical trials; his research in health outcomes and health services has been funded by the NIH, American Cancer Society and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He is a founding member of two multi-institutional research collaboratives: Trauma and Urinary Reconstructive Network of Surgeons (TURNS), and the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group (NBRG). He directs a clinical and research fellowship in Genitourinary Trauma and Reconstruction, with the goal of training future leaders in this field. 

In addition to his clinical and research accomplishments, Dr. Elliott serves on the Board of Directors and is past-President of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS), the leading academic and clinical forum for reconstructive urology. He serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Urology. 

A prolific scholar, Dr. Elliott has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributed to influential textbooks in urology. He authors the monthly Urological Survey of articles in reconstructive urology for the Journal of Urology. He is an active member of major professional societies, including the American Urological Association, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. 

Dr. Elliott’s election to the AAGUS reflects his sustained contributions to the field of urology, his leadership in reconstructive surgery, and his commitment to advancing patient care through research, education, and collaboration.
