The University of Minnesota Urology Residency Program Expands to Four Residents Per Year
The University of Minnesota Department of Urology has received formal approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Urology Residency Review Committee to permanently increase its residency program from three to four residents per year. The program will add one resident annually, reaching a total of 20 residents by the 2030-2031 academic year.
"This approval reflects the strength of our faculty, training environment, and institutional partnerships," said Dr. Philipp Dahm, Residency Program Director in the Department of Urology. "It represents an important milestone for our residency program, which launched in 1948 with a single resident, expanded to two residents in 1962, and has trained three residents per year since 2011. Increasing our residency complement will help address the growing need for urologic care in Minnesota and beyond."
The additional residency positions reflect a commitment to advancing urologic education and preparing future leaders in the field. With more residents, the department can further enhance surgical training, expand innovative educational opportunities, and provide greater flexibility for residents to pursue research.
Education has been central to the Department of Urology's mission since the residency program welcomed its first trainee nearly 80 years ago. Since then, the program has prepared generations of urologists who have gone on to serve communities throughout Minnesota and across the country, pursue prestigious fellowships, and become leaders in academic medicine. Supported by dedicated faculty mentors and a variety of clinical training sites, residents gain experience in an environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, innovation, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
This approval marks an exciting new chapter in the department's history. What began as a program with a single resident has evolved into a nationally recognized residency that is supported by outstanding faculty, leading healthcare institutions, and a shared commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education. As the department looks to the future, it remains dedicated to training the next generation of urologists and improving the lives of patients throughout Minnesota and beyond.
