University of Minnesota Urology Residents Visit Helsinki University Hospital
As part of the University of Minnesota Department of Urology’s ongoing international exchange partnership, Dr. Hanhan Li and PGY-3 residents Drs. Cathrine Keiner, Keianna Vogel, and Naser Mubarak recently traveled to Helsinki, Finland, to visit Helsinki University Hospital (HUS). The experience provided an immersive look into clinical care, research, and resident training within a Nordic, government-funded healthcare system.
During their visit, the team spent time at both the main Helsinki medical center and its affiliated satellite hospital, where the majority of urologic procedures are performed. This dual-site experience offered a comprehensive view of how care is structured and delivered across settings.
The residents observed a wide range of urologic procedures, including open, robotic, and endoscopic surgeries, gaining insight into operative techniques and workflows. They also shadowed HUS residents during morning rounds and in the cystoscopy clinic, experiencing firsthand the rhythm of resident responsibilities and patient care in Finland.
Beyond the clinical and academic setting, the visit offered meaningful opportunities to connect with HUS residents. Highlights included a visit to a traditional public sauna along the Baltic Sea as well as a memorable sailing excursion hosted by a HUS resident.
The visit to Helsinki University Hospital exemplifies the value of global engagement in medical education. By sharing knowledge, observing different care models, and building lasting professional relationships, the exchange program continues to enrich the training experience for residents while strengthening international partnerships.
