Licensing Requirements

Licensing requirements depend on where you wish to live and practice as a funeral director. It is best to contact the regulatory board in the state where you wish to pursue licensure for specific information about their licensing requirements before applying to a funeral service program. This is the best way to ensure that your academic program will satisfy the licensing requirements of the state in which you desire to practice as a funeral director.

Academic Requirements for Licensure in Funeral Service

 
In accordance with the Federal Higher Education Act, academic programs must disclose to prospective and enrolled students whether or not the academic program will satisfy the licensing requirements of the student's state.
 
Please be advised that the State of Nebraska requires coursework for licensure that is not required of the Bachelor's of Science degree program at the University of Minnesota. With proper planning, however, students can complete Nebraska's coursework licensing requirements as part of their 120-credit degree program while enrolled at the University of Minnesota. These requirements are noted here under "67-003.03 General Education."

The International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards - Licensing Requirements

Every few years, The Conference compiles, publishes, and distributes a booklet entitled “Regulations in Funeral Service Licensing, Continuing Education, and Pre-need.” This publication contains jurisdiction-specific information for all 55 Conference member boards. It has been very useful to regulators and their legislatures as well as a valuable reference tool for funeral service educators, students, professionals and the general public.

Internship application instructions

To be able to take the mortuary science state exam, you must submit:

  • A copy of your driver’s license, state ID, or passport.
  • A state licensing exam application and check or money order for $125 payable to the Minnesota Department of Health. See Mortuary Science State Licensing Exam for information.
  • A completed internship application and a check or money order for $75 payable to the Minnesota Department of Health.
  • National Board Examination results. Send a request to the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (The Conference) and ask them to send your test results electronically to [email protected].
