Other Teaching Activities

In addition to the required courses, department faculty are also heavily involved with other coursework options. In the first semester, students learn instruction in the communicative skills needed for history taking with patients and the observation of individual patient history-taking sessions with students. Within the Rural Medical Scholars program, the faculty are involved with instruction in community evaluation and implementation of community based research projects conducted by medical students.

Within the integrated organ system teaching blocks in the medical school curriculum (e.g. Cardiovascular System), members of the department participate in joint lectures and problem-based learning sessions with our basic science and clinical colleagues across the curriculum. A number of department members are also mentors for medical students learning communities across the curriculum.

Research Instruction & Mentorship

Throughout the year, faculty members serve as active instructors and supervisors of research projects with undergraduate, graduate and medical students.
