Ashley T. Haase

Dr. Haase is a summa cum laude graduate and Lucia Briggs distinguished alumnus of Lawrence University. He received his M.D. from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. Following clinical and research training at Johns Hopkins University, the National Institutes of Health and Britain’s National Institute for Medical Research, he took a position in 1971 at University of California, San Francisco where he rose through the ranks to Professor of Medicine and Microbiology. Dr. Haase moved to the University of Minnesota in 1984 where he chaired the Department of Microbiology and Immunology for four decades before stepping down in 2024. Dr. Haase was the steward of a department that sustained traditions of excellence in teaching and research recognized by the ASM Milestones in Microbiology award at its Centennial celebration in 2019. He oversaw the development of the Microbiology Research Facility, the newest building in the Biomedical Discovery District, and creation of the Infectious Diseases Corridor of Discovery and predecessor to UMIID where faculty in the department and other academic units work together with the shared goals of finding innovative solutions to life threatening and potentially pandemic infections.
 

Dr. Haase is currently Regents’ Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine. Dr. Haase is a NIH NINDS Javits Awardee and two-time recipient of an NIH MERIT Award from NIAID for his work on HIV; an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and American Academy of Microbiology; and a Fellow of the AAAS. He has served on the NIH Councils of NIAID and OAR, as the first Chair of the AIDS Research Advisory Council, and as Chair of the US Delegation for the U.S. Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program.
