Van Bergen Lectureship Explores the Future of Anesthesia Quality
This past Monday, the Department of Anesthesiology proudly hosted its 12th Annual Van Bergen Lectureship, welcoming faculty, staff, trainees, and alumni for an evening of insight, perspective, and connection.
This year’s distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Avery Tung of the University of Chicago, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking lecture on “The Future of Anesthesia Quality.” A Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care and Director of Critical Care Services at the University of Chicago, Dr. Tung is widely recognized for his work in physician decision-making, critical care medicine, and the effects of anesthesia and sedation. His visit offered a valuable opportunity for learners and faculty alike to connect with a leading voice in the field.
Dr. Tung’s lecture explored how anesthesia quality practices are likely to evolve in the coming years, challenging attendees to consider how these changes may influence clinical decision-making, care delivery, and patient safety. He highlighted the dynamic nature of quality improvement and emphasized the importance of adaptability, data-driven practices, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Van Bergen Lectureship continues to serve as an important platform for bringing thought leaders to the University of Minnesota, fostering academic exchange, and strengthening the department’s commitment to excellence in anesthesiology.
Earlier in the day, the department also hosted the Van Bergen Journal Club. This smaller, interactive session gave residents the opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Tung in discussions on anesthesia quality and safety practices, fostering thoughtful dialogue and meaningful mentorship.
We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Tung for his visit and to all who attended and contributed to making this year’s event so meaningful.
