Dr. Kumar Belani, MBBS, MS, FACA, FAAP, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota. Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Belani has served as a foundational pillar of the department, leaving an indelible mark on pediatric care, medical education, and clinical research.
Joining the faculty in 1980, Dr. Belani held numerous vital leadership positions throughout his tenure, including Interim Department Chair (2000–2005), Academic and Medical Director of Pediatric Anesthesiology, and Associate Director of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. Clinically, he was instrumental in establishing the University of Minnesota’s first dedicated pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesia team and served as Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital.
An internationally recognized scholar and speaker, Dr. Belani’s research through the Belani Lab focused on pediatric pharmacology, anesthetic safety, and measuring cyanide toxicity and its treatment using sulfanegen. His contributions to the field and the institution have been recognized with the University of Minnesota President’s Award for Outstanding Service (2018) and the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists’ Distinguished Service Award (2023).
