Clinical Quality, Outcomes, Discovery, and Evaluation Core (CQODE)
Democratizing healthcare data access
We support researchers to improve healthcare quality and delivery through data-centric research
About CQODE
Democratizing data access for clinical researchers to improve healthcare quality and delivery.
We create pathways for data-centric research that enhances healthcare quality and delivery. By democratizing healthcare data access we empower clinical and non-clinical researchers to share resources, achieve economies of scale and accelerate new projects that drive faster evaluation, insights and discovery.
CQODE’s Services
CQODE’s focus is to provide data infrastructure and streamlined access to support the growing field of health services research. This includes outcomes research, clinical quality improvement, and implementation science with a focus on providing the following services:
- Our comprehensive data repository helps researchers analyze population-level outcomes to generate real health benefits for society.
- We deliver timely and targeted data to ensure the right care reaches the right patient at the right time.
- We assist with study design and initiation, as well as grant and manuscript writing and submission.
Work with us! Go to our Center's services page and fill out the CLHSS request form to get started.
Healthcare Data Access
Looking for data to support your research? CQODE provides access to an extensive library of data sources tailored to meet the specific goals of your project. Here are some examples of the data servers we work with:
- University of Minnesota Electronic Health Records (UMN EHR) (e.g., Acute DataMart)
- State Inpatient Database (HCUP SID) (Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project)
- National Inpatient Database (HCUP NIS) (Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project)
- National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB)
- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP)
- Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
- Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)
- National Cancer Database (NCDB)
CQODE Research Projects
Pediatric Surgery Outcomes
Investigator
Randi Lassiter, MD
- Department of Surgery
The Project
The CQODE team collaborated with M Health Fairview to develop two new variables for a cohorting project. This project compared outcomes of neonatal patients who had surgical interventions with those who did not. The team ensured fast data delivery and maintained regular communication for project scope and management, flow diagram creation, and data approval.

Rural vs Urban Colorectal Patients
Investigator
Jeffrey Chipman, MD
- Department of Surgery
The Project
This study aimed to evaluate differences in outcomes among patients with colon diseases treated in rural versus urban hospitals. The CQODE team supported the project by developing a cohesive analysis plan, refining it through multiple iterations to effectively communicate the story behind the data.
Status: in progress
Impact of Treatment on Pancreatic Cancer Survival
Investigator
Ajay Prakash, MD, PhD
- Department of Medicine
The Project
Researchers used real-world data to evaluate how initial treatment modalities influenced survival outcomes for patients with stage I-III pancreatic adenocarcinoma within the M Health Fairview medical system.

University of Minnesota awarded $21M to lead research revealing effects of vagus nerve stimulation in humans
The Project
The Research Evaluating Vagal Excitation and Anatomical Links (REVEAL) project, a $21 million NIH-funded initiative, will study the anatomical connections and functional effects of vagus nerve stimulation, an FDA-approved treatment for epilepsy and depression, over three years.
Led by the University of Minnesota, the multidisciplinary team team includes faculty from the Medical School, College of Science and Engineering, and School of Public Health, representing key centers like CQODE, the Center for Neuroengineering, the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, and the Minnesota Consortium for Autonomic Neuromodulation.
