Michael Loushin, MD

Michael Loushin, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and serves as Associate Director of the Visible Heart Laboratories (VHL) at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Loushin’s relationship with the University of Minnesota spans several decades. After earning his medical degree at the Medical School, he completed his anesthesiology residency with the Department of Anesthesiology, where he served as Chief Resident. He went on to join the faculty, serving as Medical Director of Perioperative Services at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and earning two Teacher of the Year awards from the department. Dr. Loushin spent over two decades as an anesthesiologist and executive leader with Twin Cities Anesthesia Associates (TCAA), serving as President, CEO, and COO, while maintaining a continuous research collaboration with the Visible Heart Lab.

In his role as Associate Director of the VHL, Dr. Loushin works alongside leadership to advance the laboratory’s pioneering research in cardiovascular physiology and anatomy, 3D anatomical modeling, medical device development, and hands-on clinical education. An accomplished medical device innovator and entrepreneur, he holds more than a dozen U.S. and international patents. His unique background combining high-acuity pediatric and adult clinical practice, healthcare operations, and medical technology innovation helps bridge clinical needs with cutting-edge academic research.
