The Department of Surgery and Center for Learning Health System Sciences are thrilled to announce that we are welcoming Hoifung Poon, PhD to campus on March 18–19.

Dr. Poon is the General Manager at Microsoft Health Futures where he leads biomedical AI research and incubation, with the overarching goal of structuring medical data to accelerate discovery and improve delivery for precision health. His team and collaborators are among the first to explore large language models (LLMs) in health applications, from foundational research to incubations at large health systems and life science companies, and ultimately to commercialization.

On March 18, we will host a town hall with Dr. Poon from 4:30–5:30pm in Coffman Theater where he will discuss the future of AI, followed by a Q&A session that will be open to the audience. Attendees are welcome to attend a reception following in the Campus Club where hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be offered.

On March 19 Dr. Poon will give a talk at the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds from 7:30–8:30am at Mayo Auditorium. A breakfast buffet will be provided. Read on for the abstract of Dr. Poon’s grand rounds presentation.

Advancing Health at the Speed of AI
The dream of precision health is to develop a data-driven, continuous learning system where new health information is instantly incorporated to optimize care delivery and accelerate biomedical discovery. In reality, however, the health ecosystem is plagued by overwhelming unstructured data and unscalable manual processing. Self-supervised AI such as large language models (LLMs) can supercharge structuring of biomedical data and accelerate transformation towards precision health. In this talk, I'll present our research progress on biomedical AI for precision health, spanning biomedical LLMs, multi-modal learning, and causal discovery. This enables us to extract knowledge from tens of millions of publications, structure real-world data for millions of cancer patients, and apply the extracted knowledge and real-world evidence to advancing precision oncology in deep partnerships with real-world stakeholders.

Please join us for this exciting opportunity to learn from Dr. Poon and hear his insights on the future of AI.
