MN-LHS Program Welcomes New Cohort of Scholars
The Minnesota Learning Health System (MN-LHS) Mentored Career Development Program is excited to welcome a new cohort of scholars! Starting in January 2024, Drs. Rubina Rizvi and Derek Lumbard will receive support and training to conduct patient-centered research and improve health care within a learning health system. The new scholars are funded by the Office of Academic Clinical Affairs and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Rubina Rizvi, MD, PhD
Dr. Rizvi is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and a digital integration lead at the Center for Learning Health System Sciences. Her areas of research interest are human-computer interaction, usability evaluations/workflow analysis of health technologies with end-users, and dissecting and decoding data using novel methodologies. She is a strong advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially when it comes to equitable healthcare delivery leveraging digital technologies. Her LHS project focuses on evaluating disparities in patient portal use and piloting an intervention to address these gaps.
Derek Lumbard, MD
Dr. Lumbard is a trauma and critical care surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Hennepin Healthcare, and an adjunct assistant professor at University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. He is also a research scholar with Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute. His current work focuses on community violence prevention, particularly firearm injuries. He works closely with the Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP), Next Step, which provides resources to support survivors of violent injuries. His LHS project focuses on evaluating the effectiveness and reach of the HVIP to support pathways to recovery after injury.
