New Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences
A Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Orengo-Nania comes to us from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX, where she is currently a Professor of Ophthalmology and from which she received her MD. Her clinical service includes the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. She was the Eye Care Line Executive and supervisor of resident training for the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center for thirty years. She has received numerous awards, among them the Master Clinician Award – Excellence in Patient Care from the Baylor College of Medicine and the Outstanding Surgeon Award from the Association of Operating Room Nurses. Dr. Orengo-Nania is active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, and the International Society of Spaeth Fellows.
An outstanding surgeon, her practice specializes in glaucoma and cataracts. Her research is focused on glaucoma and she has been a co-investigator on a number of clinical trials to test different drug therapies in patients with elevated intraocular pressure and an investigator and several NEI sponsored trials. She is a regular lecturer for the Annual Cullen Course at Baylor College of Medicine and the American Academy of Ophthalmology receiving the Senior Achievement and Life Achievement Honors Award for her work.
Dr. Orengo-Nania brings outstanding experience in administration, education and clinical practice, and we look forward to her joining the Department and our leadership team.
