Combined Pathway Program Offers Complimentary Degree Opportunities During Residency

Physicians engage in all aspects of health care, not only direct patient care, and hospitals that are run by physician leaders show better hospital performance (of up to 25 % higher) than non-physician run hospitals.

The Department of Anesthesiology has collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health Executive MHA program and Carlson School of Management Part-time MBA program as well as the University of Southern California’s Masters in Academic Medicine and University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati Children’s) Masters in Medical Education to offer these masters tracks highly applicable to future physician leaders.

Up to one new resident in the Department will be financially supported for one of these programs every year. Dip Shukla, MD was recently admitted to the Carlson School of Management Part-time MBA program and will begin in 2021, having until the completion of his residency in 2024 to also finish the MBA program.

Said Dr. Shukla, “I chose to apply to the Combined Pathway Program for an MBA to develop the knowledge necessary to engage with healthcare at the individual as well as system levels. This training approach will support my interest in learning about the business aspects of healthcare, and create more depth to my clinical training.”
