Early and Mid-Career Development Awards 2022

The Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Early and Mid-Career Development Awards.

Early Career Development Awards

The Early Career awards program was started in 2019 as a development program, but COVID-19 put a pause on the program. This is a competitive program for assistant professors to expand their research. Applicants must submit a formal project protocol – with no restrictions on subject matter (clinical research, education, quality improvement, etc). All candidates must have a senior faculty mentor to help advise projects.

Applications were reviewed by a departmental committee consisting of Drs. Coursin, Perry, Prielipp, Remskar, Stone and Todd, (with program development suggestions from Dr. Berg). The primary goal is to provide added ARTS days to the awardees, along with small amounts of money for other needs (e.g IT, lab measurements etc). The number of awardee’s is defined by the money available for the program ($250,000 in time and other expenses) and the needs of each individual application.

The six winners are:

  • Dr. Ben Fuller: Superficial Cervical Plexus Block for Improved Outcomes in Pediatric Otolaryngologic Surgery. (Mentor: Dr. Aaron Berg)
  • Dr. Ben Gorbaty: Developing and Testing an Immersive, Interactive and Multi Modal Educational Platform for Learning Transesophageal Echocardiography. (Mentor: Dr. Tjorvi Perry)
  • Dr. Steve Richardson: Eye-Tracking Glasses to Assess and Improve Resident Performance During Arterial and Central Line Placement. (Mentor: Dr. Tjorvi Perry)
  • Dr. James Flaherty: Transversus abdominis plane block with liposomal bupivacaine versus thoracic epidural analgesia for pain control following pancreaticoduodenectomy: a prospective, randomized, non-inferiority trial. (Mentor: Dr. Neil Hanson)
  • Dr. Megan King: Determining Whether Race is a Predictor of Perioperative Respiratory Complications among Pediatric Patients. (Mentor: Dr. Mojca Remskar)
  • Dr. Jakob Guenther: Systematic Evaluation of electrolytes, euvolemia, and euglycemia in peds (SEE3P). (Mentor: Dr. Mojca Remskar)

A total of 133 additional ARTS days will be distributed to the awardees along with about $10,000 in direct expenses.

Mid-Career Development Award

This is a new program in 2022. It is intended for our more senior faculty (Associate Professors) for more developed projects than the Early Career Development Award. It is intended as a means of providing the awardee with the time and resources to move toward substantial extramural funding – and such applications are an expected part of this award. Only 1 award is made. The primary award is 28 added ARTS days – with the option to increase this to ≈41 added days for a small reduction in salary. This will bring the awardee up to approximately 2 ARTS days per week for a full year. An additional $10,000 is available for necessary expenses.

This years awardee is Dr. Vasudha Goel, for her project entitled: The role of intrathecal drug delivery for pain management among cancer survivors (Mentor: Dr. Michael Todd).
