UMN Anesthesiologists Co-Author Paper on Survival of Intraoperative Massive Pulmonary Embolism Using Alteplase and VA-ECMO

Monica Lupei, MD, Benjamin Kloesel, MD and Ioanna Apostolidou, MD in the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Anesthesiology and Lida Trillos, MD from the Minneapolis VA Health Care System co-authored the letter to the editor titled “Survival of Intraoperative Massive Pulmonary Embolism Using Alteplase and VA-ECMO”, published in the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia.

The report covers the case of a 54-year-old patient who experienced massive pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest during surgery.

“Our multidisciplinary team collaborated and resuscitated the patient, administered fibrinolytic medication that dissolves the blood clot and provided other intensive care therapies including Veno-Arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or VA-ECMO. The patient outcome and recovery were excellent,” said Dr. Lupei.
