The Department of Surgery is excited to welcome Piper Ranallo, PhD as an assistant professor in the Division of Computational Health Sciences. Dr. Ranallo is a clinical informatician who has performed basic research in both the biomedical and behavioral sciences.

With expertise in technologies for the optimal capture, representation, transformation, and exchange of clinical data, Dr. Ranallo brings a wealth of experience applying, critically evaluating, and developing technologies for the computable representation of clinical data and theoretical models. Additionally, she performs research on gaps in standards at the interface of biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences and has developed a robust information model for standard assessment instruments.

Dr. Ranallo will also focus on building an interoperability and terminology lab within the Center for Learning Health System Sciences. One vital goal of this lab is to develop and disseminate a semantic interoperability curriculum aimed at various audiences, including students, clinicians, researchers, and IT professionals.

She received her doctorate in Health Informatics from the University of Minnesota and is the co-editor of an informatics textbook in Mental Health Informatics.

"People often find words like 'terminology', 'ontology', and 'knowledge representation' daunting. I hope to inspire and empower the University community to embrace these powerful tools in our pursuit of knowledge to optimize health outcomes," said Dr. Ranallo.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ranallo to the Department of Surgery!
