Laboratory of Metabolic Physiology in Cancer

Biography

Dr. Xiaojing Huang is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology and a member of the Division of Molecular Medicine and the Masonic Cancer Center. She is a physician-scientist specializing in cancer metabolism, adipose–tumor interactions, and translational radiation oncology. Prior to coming to UMN, Dr. Huang was a KL2 Clinical Scholar at The Rockefeller University, where her research focused on metabolic mechanisms linking obesity, immune function, and cancer progression. She received her MD/PhD in Computational and Systems Biology from Washington University in St. Louis and completed residency training in Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was a Holman Research Pathway fellow. Her work has been supported by a Young Investigator Grant from the Breast Cancer Alliance.

Research

We have two focus areas in the lab. The first investigates the mechanisms by which obesity influences cancer biology and response to treatment. The second examines how adipose tissue responds to radiation to influence metabolic health and immune function in cancer patients. In both areas there is a current emphasis on the role of macrophages in adipose tissue and tumors, although we also pursue obesity-induced metabolic changes in other cell types. We utilize a variety of multidisciplinary approaches including mouse models, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, computational pipelines for large datasets, and human subjects studies.
