Dr. Zantek is a pathologist with expertise in transfusion medicine/blood banking with a particular interest in pediatric issues, apheresis, and hemostasis testing. She is the medical director of the Special Coagulation Laboratory. She is interested in general issues surrounding hemostasis test performance, utilization, and interpretation. In particular, she is exploring how medical circuits, such as ventricular assist devices and apheresis cell separators, influence hemostasis in adult and pediatric patients. She has led the Chilled Platelet Study (CHIPS) multicenter, international, randomized, adaptive designed clinical trial comparing cold stored versus standard room temperature stored platelets in active bleeding from cardiac surgery. She is advancing the practice of the evidence-based medicine through guideline work on therapeutic apheresis, red blood cell and platelet transfusion, transfusion of critically ill children, and pediatric anticoagulation while on ECMO.
