Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Observerships

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology offers qualified US and International physicians the opportunity to observe our physicians, residents, and fellows in practice. The goal is to provide insight into day-to-day responsibilities of pathologists practicing in the United States. A limited number of observerships are available each year.

  • Observers are responsible for all lodging, travel, visa, parking, and meal arrangements and costs. There is no stipend associated with an observership.
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology as well as MHealth Fairview reserve the right to terminate an observer’s rotation at any time.
  • Observers are able to attend didactic conferences only during the time of their observership experience.
  • Observerships will not be granted for longer than one month.
  • The Department is unable to accept an observer more than 2.5 months ahead of the desired observership start date and not less than 2 weeks ahead of the start date.
  • The Department is unable to host observers from June 15-August 31. No exceptions will be made.
  • Observers are required to show proof of the following immunizations: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B series, Pertussis (TDaP), Influenza, and a Tuberculosis screening

In order to be considered, the observer must contact a faculty member (please limit this to a specific area of interest rather than emailing broadly) to inquire about coming to observe with them. Each of the following documents must be included:

  • CV
  • USMLE (or COMLEX) exam scores for at least Steps 1 and 2
  • Minimum of 1 letter of recommendation
