The University of Minnesota Department of Orthopedic Surgery, in partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) IDEA Grant, has launched a URiM visiting student scholarship that provides financial assistance for 3rd-year visiting medical students from underrepresented groups (as defined by the AAMC) who are planning to pursue residency training in Orthopedic Surgery!

What does the scholarship provide?

The selected student(s) will receive a stipend to be used for their travel and housing expenses during their four-week Orthopedic Bootcamp rotation in Minneapolis from February 5 - March 1, 2024. Students’ academic achievements, demonstrated leadership, orthopedic interest, and academic standings will all be considered when selecting candidates.

What is Orthopedic Bootcamp?

Orthopedic Bootcamp is a 4 week, in-person course that teaches you everything you need to know to succeed on orthopedic rotations — didactic sessions that include common msk conditions, reading X-rays, physical exams, simulation sessions for splinting, suturing, sawbones, fracture reductions, cast removal, how to do a case presentation, and much more!

Required Application Questions

Essay questions are required to be completed before submitting your application. Questions and respective upload tool can be found on the application form. 

Following acceptance, there are additional VSLO rotation requirements to review:
  • Granted early access by your home institution to your VSLO account.
  • VSLO elective page
  • We require a reverse affiliation agreement with the visiting student's host institution. Please verify your home program is listed here.
