Dr. Smith has been on the Faculty of Emergency Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare since 1991, and full Professor of Emergency Medicine since 2014, with 190 peer-reviewed publications on PubMed. He has published widely in Emergency Cardiac Care, including dozens of articles on use of troponin for rule out of acute MI, but especially on the ECG in Acute MI, including a 38-chapter book and many other chapters and textbook sections, and approximately 80 peer-reviewed articles. In 2008, he began writing “Dr. Smith’s ECG Blog,” a free open access site, now with over 1800 posts highlighting complex ECG cases, mostly relating to subtle acute coronary occlusion. The blog has 26 million pageviews from readers around the world. His ECG insights are sufficiently novel and cutting edge that his site has over 55,000 Twitter followers and over 350,000 Facebook followers. Since 2014, he has been lecturing on the “False STEMI / NonSTEMI Dichotomy,” and in 2018, he and colleagues introduced the Occlusion MI paradigm as its replacement. In promoting this new paradigm, he gave the Annual Keynote “Rijlant” Lecture at the 2021 International Society of Electrocardiology, the 2022 “Kenichi Harumi” Plenary Address at the International Society of Computers in Electrocardiology, and Grand Rounds all over the world, including at the Mayo Clinic Department of Cardiology. Finally, he has trained the Queen of Hearts PM Cardio AI deep neural network model to diagnose acute coronary occlusion on the ECG with very high sensitivity and specificity.
