Resident & Fellow Benefits

Benefits for medical residents and fellows are managed through the UMN Office of Student Health Benefits. View the OSHB Resident/Fellow Benefits site for comprehensive information about the resident/fellow benefit package, including medical, dental, disability, and life insurance.

Insurance and Health Coverage

Health Insurance:

  • Resident and family coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota 
  • Automatic emergency travel assistance 
  • Available on first day of orientation 
  • Available for fellows and family members 

Short- and Long-term Disability:

  • Up to $5,000 covered per month during residency at no cost 
  • Loan payoff if disabled during residency 
  • May enroll in guaranteed coverage until age 67 for up to $10,000 per month, regardless of pre-existing condition 

 

Dental Insurance:

  • Available for fellows and family members 

Life Insurance:

  • Group term provided at no cost. Additional coverage available 

Malpractice Insurance:

Coverage provided for activities within the course and scope of resident duties at no cost 

Other Benefits:

Fitness Membership - University Recreation and Wellness Center at student membership rates

Resident & Fellow Stipends

Retirement

Eligible to enroll in two plans:

  • Optional Retirement Plan
  • 456 Deferred Compensation Program

     

Vacation and Leaves

Paid Time Off (PTO)

22 days per contract year. These days are designed to cover vacations and unexpected absences such as sick days and funeral/bereavement leave. Up to 5 additional days of academic leave to attend conferences, sit for exams, or practice search are permitted at the Program Director's discretion.

  • Trainees are given alternate days off for holidays worked.

Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption Leave

  • 6 weeks maternity leave, paid at 100%
    • 4-6 weeks of additional disability pay benefit for birth mothers
  • 6 weeks paid paternity or adoption leave upon request

Leaves of absence may extend training and delay board eligibility

Professional Development and Continuing Education

Academic Business Expense Reimbursement Fund

  • Up to $1,000 reimbursement per year for conference expenses, medical association memberships, web-based courses, clinical textbooks and medical journals, and educational or clinical software.

Continuing Medical Education

  • Up to five days per year at the program director's discretion.
