Dr. Murugan is a surgical pathologist who serves as an expert consultant in Genitourinary and Soft Tissue/Bone Pathology. In addition to his clinical diagnostic role, for which he has received several Clinical Excellence and Top Doctor awards, he is deeply committed to education, having been honored with the Anatomic Pathology Teacher of the Year award on multiple occasions. Dr. Murugan has published over 110 peer-reviewed articles and serves as a co-investigator on several NIH grant-funded projects. He is a UMN Academy for Excellence in Team Science inductee and is the Biospecimen Core Co-Director of the UMN/Mayo Clinic prostate cancer NIH SPORE. His professional leadership includes elected membership on the College of American Pathologists Cancer Committee where he has led and co-authored multiple genitourinary, soft tissue, and bone cancer reporting protocols. Additionally, he serves on the AJCC Retroperitoneal Sarcoma panel and was an expert reviewer for the NCI’s Cancer PathCHART initiative. He directs the UMN Surgical Pathology Fellowship program, and is the section editor of Urological Pathology for the journal Diagnostic Pathology.
