Professor and Department of Orthopedic Surgery Vice Chair Elizabeth Arendt, MD, has been a pioneer throughout her career. She was the first female orthopedic surgeon at the University of Minnesota in 1985, the first female team physician for Division I athletics and attained a Patellofemoral Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for her extensive research and advancement of patellofemoral joint knowledge. Dr. Arendt has been practicing at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center for 35 years, bringing a wealth of experience and world-class care to Minnesotans. Dr. Arendt is internationally known for her expertise caring for patients with patellofemoral injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, patellar injuries or dislocation, knee arthritis or deformity, and joint instability.

Professor Edward Cheng, MD, has brought compassionate care and expertise to M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center for 30 years. Professor and Department Head Denis Clohisy, MD, developed a passion for providing expert care to orthopedic oncology patients and their families while completing his residency training at the U. Since then, Dr. Clohisy has been bringing hope and changing lives at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center. His research has been instrumental in better understanding how sarcomas (bone cancer) interact with bone and impact sarcoma pain, discoveries that are crucial to alleviating patient pain and improving quality of life. Throughout his 29 years in practice, he has been committed to advancing all levels of musculoskeletal education and developed outstanding community orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic clinician scientists as the department head. Dr. Clohisy brings world-renowned care for musculoskeletal oncology with a focus on both primary and metastatic bone cancers and management of musculoskeletal problems in hemophilia.

Assistant Professor Aaron Corfield, DPM, is board-certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and has been practicing at M Health Fairview since 2016. Associate Professor Alicia Harrison, MD, knew she wanted to develop a complex shoulder practice since her orthopedic surgery residency training at the U. She joined the department’s faculty after completing a shoulder and elbow fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, NY. She was appointed the associate residency program director in 2014. In addition to continuously assessing and improving the department’s residency program and ensuring access to high-quality orthopedic care across the state, she serves as the department’s medical school clerkship director and makes an impact attracting medical students to orthopedic surgery. Dr. Harrison delivers expert care for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder and elbow fractures and dislocations, arthritis of the shoulder, shoulder instability and shoulder joint replacement.

David Jewison, MD, is a board-certified family medicine and sports medicine physician and assistant professor in the U of M Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He proudly serves as team physician for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Football and Men’s Hockey teams and provides care for student athletes. He’s been recognized by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine as a 2020 Rising Star in sports medicine and enjoys working with his patients to develop a care plan that works for each individual. Dr. Jewison is dedicated to providing sports medicine and orthopedic care for all ages; which ranges from fracture care, pediatric overuse and growth plate injuries, ligament and tendon injuries, joint preservation (PRP injections), sports-related concussions, spine health, ultrasound-guided injections, and arthritis care.

Jeffrey Macalena, MD, has a passion for solving clinical problems and getting patients back on their feet and enjoying activities. Since joining the Department of Orthopedic Surgery’s faculty as an assistant professor in 2011, Dr. Macalena has led a busy clinical practice doing just that. Between providing physician coverage for multiple Gopher sports, research, and resident education, he has been at the forefront of providing innovative options for our patients. He was appointed director of M Health Fairview’s cutting-edge Cartilage Restoration and Joint Preservation Program in 2019, one of a handful in the state of Minnesota. The program encompasses a variety of procedures and techniques that can negate or delay the need for a joint replacement surgery, providing patients with new and emerging techniques for joint preservation and cartilage reconstruction in the knee and critically following outcomes. Dr. Macalena specializes in sports medicine and athletic injuries to the knee, including knee ligament reconstructions, cartilage surgery, meniscus surgery, and joint preservation.

Bradley Nelson, MD, has been practicing as a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center since 2006. As an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, he spearheaded the innovative Cartilage Restoration and Joint Preservation Program aimed at bringing patients new techniques to negate or delay the need for a joint replacement surgery. In addition to serving as a Gopher Athletics team physician, Dr. Nelson is a USA Hockey team physician and president of the NHL (National Hockey League) Team Physician Society. Dr. Nelson specializes in the areas of shoulder instability, arthroscopic shoulder surgery and rotator cuff repair, articular cartilage injuries, ACL injuries and reconstructions, and meniscal injuries and transplantation. Dr. Smith cares for athletes of all skill levels and is a team physician for Gopher Athletics, medical director for Twin Cities in Motion, and adjunct team physician for both the University of St. Thomas and Bethel University. For Professor Ann Van Heest, MD, treatment of children with hand and upper extremity disorders, clinical research and education of future orthopedic surgeons are the pillars of her work. Dr. Van Heest makes a big difference in healthcare as a professor of orthopedic surgery and as vice-chair of education for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. As the department’s residency program director for 17 years, one of her core initiatives has been to increase gender diversity in orthopedic surgery, since just 14 percent of orthopedic surgery residents are female, the lowest of any surgical specialty. With leadership from Dr. Van Heest and a growing number of female faculty, the department has had 25 percent female residency graduates over the last decade. She earned the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award in 2011, the highest recognition for an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) program director for her work advancing all aspects of orthopedics. Dr. Van Heest focuses on neuromuscular disorders, such as cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury, birth brachial plexus injuries and many congenital hand differences. She has focused her clinical practice on helping children with upper extremity and hand differences maximize their function, by treating and supporting both patients and their families.

Assistant Professor Ariel Williams, MD, is a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon with the department since 2017. Dr. Williams completed orthopedic residency training and the Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medicine and developed clinical interests in cubital tunnel syndromes, nerve compression disorders, and peripheral nerve disorders. She partners with patients to treat conditions including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures, ligament and tendon injuries, and other congenital anamolies and conditions.
