Dr. Michael T. Nelson to receive 2018 ACR Foundation Global Humanitarian Award
Michael T. Nelson, M.D., FACR in the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Radiology received the 2018 American College of Radiology (ACR) Foundation Global Humanitarian Award in the category of individual radiologist. Dr. Nelson’s work on improving health care in Tanzania through the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, the Foundation for Cancer Care and the East Africa Medical Assistance Foundation played a large role in the decision.
Said the ACR Foundation, “[Dr. Nelson’s] work has been truly inspirational and well represents the attributes of those who receive the ACRF Global Humanitarian Award.”
Dr. Nelson began his humanitarian work in 1989 on his first trip to Tanzania as a board examiner and has been instrumental in establishing and supporting the radiology training school in Tanzania through the University of Minnesota Department of Radiology. Since his first trip, Dr. Nelson has traveled to Tanzania 32 times using vacation time to volunteer at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in various capacities—attending graduation, giving the boards, teaching and consulting.
Said Dr. Nelson, “There’s a lot of people working [in Tanzania] that can change the outcomes of a population of 18 million people and those of us who have been working on it for 25+ years have seen that. This award is a great honor.”
Dr. Nelson will be presented with the award at the Annual Meeting of the ACR May 21, 2018 in Washington, DC.
