PM&R Chief Resident, Dr. Amanda Day, spearheaded a fun initiative for the community to get to know our residents. The PM&R resident spotlight is on PGY3, Dr. Mahmood Alatbee.

Where did you go to medical school?

University of Babylon/ College of Medicine, Babylon/ Iraq.

What drew you to PM&R?
In PM&R, most of the time we take care of patients who have a life drifting event. I love PM&R because it is rewarding being able to be an influential team member throughout the patient's journey to accomplish their goals. Also, I like PM&R because it is a broad field that will equip me with the clinical skill set to deal with inpatient, outpatient, and procedural experiences.

Why the University of Minnesota for your PM&R training?
I believe that people around you make the difference. I think the substantial value of our program comes from individuals in the program (program faculty, coordinators, and co-residents) who have a profound reserve of knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm to share their expertise.

What advice would you give a current applicant hoping to match PM&R?
You are going to spend most of your days for the next four years in residency; when it comes to choosing a program look at what kind of people you want to be around.

What are your favorite things about Minnesota?
I love the beautiful nature that Minnesota offers. I will not say more, see pictures!

What are your interests within PM&R?
I am applying to the Spinal Cord Injury Medicine fellowship! I would also like to explore international rehabilitation opportunities.

What has your favorite rotation been during residency thus far?
In our residency program, we rotate at six different sites, and each site offers a unique experience in rehabilitation. Since I am biased to acute inpatient rehabilitation, I would say I enjoyed all of my acute inpatient rotations.

What are some fun facts about yourself?

  • I was a barber at some point in my life!
  • I love cooking when I have time!
