Fostering Collaboration: Helsinki Urologists Visit the U

In a unique exchange of knowledge and collaboration, our institution had the honor of hosting a group of Urologists from the University of Helsinki. Part of an ongoing exchange program designed to foster international academic partnerships and enhance urological education, this program — started during the pandemic — has broadened the horizons for residents at both institutions.

The visit by the Helsinki urologists is a continuation of an existing program originally founded during the height of the pandemic. Doctors Warlick and residency program director Dr. Phil Dahm led a group of U of MN residents to Helsinki last year. The shared experiences and mutual respect developed during the visit laid a strong foundation for ongoing research partnerships, joint projects, and knowledge sharing initiatives culminating in the Helsinki urologists’ visit to Minnesota.

During their visit, the Helsinki urologists immersed themselves in the vibrant academic and clinical environment at the University. The program included a comprehensive itinerary, including participation in multidisciplinary conferences, observation of advanced surgical procedures, and discussions with our faculty. A highlight of the visit was the 2023 John Barry Lecture given by Dr. Antti Rannikko from the University of Helsinki highlighting his work in prostate cancer.
