University of Minnesota Adjunct Professor Martin A. Koyle Wins 2023 Teaching Award

Adjunct Professor Dr. Koyle received the award for his inspiring, impactful, and exemplary teaching and mentorship

Minneapolis, MN - The University of Minnesota is proud to announce that Dr. Martin A. Koyle, MD, MSc, MMgt, MBA (cert), FAAP, FACS, FRCS (Eng.), FRCSC, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Teaching Award by the American Urological Association (AUA). Dr. Koyle, who serves as an Adjunct Professor of Urology at the University of Minnesota and is a Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Toronto, was nominated by resident physicians for his exceptional dedication and effectiveness in teaching urology residents.

His mentoring activities are described as "impactful and exemplary," and he is known for his ability to inspire others to reach their potential in a kind and unassuming way. Dr. Koyle's impact on the Department of Urology at the University of Minnesota has been described as "tremendous" by Department Head Dr. Christopher Warlick.

“Despite being a ‘part-time’ faculty member, his impact on our department has been tremendous,” said Dr. Warlick. “Since arriving [in 2021], Dr. Koyle has completely and enthusiastically immersed himself into teaching our residents and students.”

Dr. Koyle's teaching and mentoring activities extend beyond the University of Minnesota. He is also a faculty member at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Montreal, where he is involved in the International Masters in Health Leadership (IMHL) and the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management (GCHM) programs. Dr. Koyle has also served as a Visiting Professor at 32 North American residency and fellowship programs, as well as international organizations such as the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), the Urological Association of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ), the Philippine Urological Society, and the Taiwan Urological Society.

"Dr. Koyle has a knack for quickly identifying areas in need of improvement, both on the individual level with his trainees and systemically," said Dr. Jacob Albersheim, a PGY-5 Urology Resident at the University of Minnesota. "It's his ability to inspire others to reach their potential in a kind, unassuming way that makes Dr. Koyle a special mentor."

With over 3 1/2 decades of experience in practice, Dr. Koyle has contributed over 300 manuscripts to peer-reviewed literature and published over 100 chapters. He has a deep interest in global health and has volunteered considerable time to medical missions around the world. Dr. Koyle has also served on numerous editorial boards, including his current role as Associate Editor for the Journal of Pediatric Urology. He has been actively involved in various committees within the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Surgeons, and has taught at the American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Board Review Course for almost a decade. He currently serves on the AUA Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) Committee and AUA Education Council.

The 2023 AUA Teaching Award was nominated by resident physicians Jacob Albersheim, MD (University of Minnesota), Brent Cleveland, MD (University of Minnesota), and Jin Kyu (Justin) Kim, MD (University of Toronto). Dr. Koyle will be presented with the award during the Residents Forum program at the AUA Annual Meeting.

Dr. Koyle's commitment to teaching and mentoring, his value-based and principled behaviors, and his exemplary role modeling have earned him this well-deserved recognition.
