The November/December 2018 issue of Metro Doctors, the Journal of the Twin Cities Medical Society, features former Department Head Lyle French, MD, PhD. French led the department from 1960 to 1970, built an international reputation, and developed many neurosurgical advances.

He was the first vice president for Health Science Affairs at the U, a position French would retain until 1982. In addition, he held leadership positions in several national organizations.

French was also instrumental in shaping the disciplined approach to teaching and learning neurosurgery that became known as "the Minnesota way."
