Curriculum

Our residency offers a 5 year categorical training experience with 2 years of general pediatrics training, 12 months of adult neurology experiences, and 24 months of child neurology training.

Highlights include:

  • INDIVIDUALIZED TRAINING -  Leveraging diverse expertise amongst faculty, residents have the opportunity to tailor their residency experience to align with their professional passions, interests, and goals through unique elective experiences, faculty mentorship through a longitudinal advising program and optional tracks in medical education and research.
  • BOOTCAMP - This unique one-month rotation takes place at the American Academy of Neurology headquarters in June of the G2 year. Bootcamp jump starts the neurology years with a protected academic experience designed to provide a strong foundation in clinical neurology alongside your adult neurology colleagues
  • MULTI-SITE TRAINING MODEL - Clinical experiences are offered across four partner sites, each serving distinct and diverse patient populations while providing exposure to a variety of hospital systems and care delivery models. Faculty collaborate across sites to support residents and optimize training experiences.
  • FRIDAY SCHOOL - We are proud to offer a robust weekly curriculum delivered as an academic half-day, providing a strong foundation in child neurology and the neurosciences as well as sessions focused on medical education, research, quality improvement, and advocacy.
Child Neurology

Child Neurology

Residents will have 8 months per year of Pediatric Neurology training in years 3-5, intentionally providing exposure to a breadth of patient populations and pathologies ranging from commonplace to rare early in training. Trainees will work in private practice, academic, and safety net settings, honing skills necessary for advocacy and community engagement. With a deep bench of subspecialist faculty, residents will have ample opportunity for career development, enriching electives, and research exposure. During the PGY3 -5 years, residents will participate in their half-day continuity clinic, staffed by a rotation of child neurology faculty.

The clinic takes place at the Masonic Institute of the Developing Brain, a unique continuity clinic home that provides clinical care across the spectrum of pediatric neuroscience, mental health, and brain health and allows collaboration across associated disciplines and residencies.

Adult Neurology

Adult Neurology

Residents will complete four months of adult neurology in training years 3, 4, and 5, enabling residents to develop meaningful peer relationships with co-residents, and to serve in the role of a senior resident. Adult neurology rotations include strong exposure to inpatient settings including general neurology, stroke, and neurocritical care. Residents will also complete clinical neurophysiology and outpatient sub-specialty care, providing exposure to lifespan care of neurological disorders emerging in childhood.

Pediatrics

Pediatrics

Residents will rotate alongside general pediatrics residents at our core partner sites as part of their first two years. This curriculum will prepare residents for board eligibility, including a mix of electives designed to facilitate exposure to neurology topics in the first two years. These include genetics, complex care, and developmental pediatrics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.  During the pediatrics training years, residents will participate in the general pediatrics continuity clinic which are offered across a variety of unique settings (urban pediatrics, free-standing children’s hospital clinics, and suburban private practice).

Residents will maintain contact with pediatric neurology residency leadership for mentorship and join their Adult Neurology resident colleagues for an innovative ‘bootcamp’ experience as they transition into the neurology years.
