Matthew A. Hunt was born in Baton Rouge, LA, and grew up in Louisville, KY. He attended Williams College where he was a rower and a chemistry major. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland OR, followed by his neurosurgical residency there and a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology. After residency, he spent a year at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, UK. Following training he started on the faculty at the University of Minnesota Department of Neurosurgery. At the U, he worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team treating pet dogs with spontaneous brain tumors as a model of human disease. He developed NeuroSafe, a department-sponsored national conference dedicated to quality and safety in neurosurgery. He served as program director for the neurosurgery residency program, and is now Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Neurosurgery. He serves as Co-Chief for the Neuroscience Service Line at M Health Fairview. His practice includes brain tumor and spine surgery. He and his wife, Heather, have two boys, Parker and Sullivan. They all love to ski and spend time at the cabin.
