Research
Dr. Low's research is focused on translating neuroscience developments from the laboratory to the clinic. He has been involved in a number of technologies that include neural progenitor/stem cell therapies and gene therapies. Somatic cells have been used to generate human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) which, in turn, are used to produce human brain organoids. These organoids mimic the process of brain development giving rise to a variety of cells such as neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendroglia that can be used as therapies along with other stem cell products to repair the brain and spinal cord after injury, and also for neurodegenerative diseases. Neural disorders of interest include ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, lysosomal storage disorders of the brain, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury.
