Educational Programs

The Lillehei Heart Institute (LHI) pursues its educational mission by funding and managing several superior educational programs in cardiovascular research. It is our goal to produce world-class researchers who will advance the cure for heart disease.

Summer Research Scholars Program

Summer Research Scholars Program

The Lillehei Heart Institute offers annual summer research scholarships in basic science research related to cardiovascular disease. These highly competitive, prestigious scholarships are designed to expose highly qualified students to several disciplines within cardiovascular disease research and its clinical applications.

Wilson Scholars Summer Research Program

Wilson Scholars Summer Research Program

The Wilson Scholars Program gives first-year medical school students at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities or Duluth campuses a summer scholarship to perform research work with an LHI faculty mentor.

Lhi Lectures

Lillehei Heart Institute (LHI) Lecture Series

The weekly LHI Lecture series, which runs from September through May of each year, provides an opportunity for faculty researchers from all over the country to share their research with University of Minnesota Investigators.

Visible Heart Program

LHI also supports Dr. Paul Iaizzo's Visible Heart program, an interactive educational web site jointly developed and maintained by the University of Minnesota and Medtronic, Inc.

“A Heart to Learn"
The “A Heart to Learn" program was developed for elementary and middle school outreach and heart education through the Visible Heart Laboratory (VHL) and Lillehei Heart Institute. Our goal is to get kids excited about science, to help them understand the importance of a healthy heart/lifestyle, and to provide a basic understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Visit the VHL outreach web page for more info about “A Heart to Learn” and to schedule an event.

Atlas of Human Cardiac Anatomy
Created by the Visible Heart Lab in collaboration with LifeSource and the Lillehei Heart Institute, the Atlas of Human Cardiac Anatomy is a free, online tool that provides access to 3-D, animated images of human cardiac anatomy. Click here to browse the Atlas.

Lillehei Endowed Scholars Program

Lillehei Endowed Scholars

The Lillehei Endowed Scholars Program provides research funds for everyone from undergrads to faculty members. The Lillehei Scholars Program supports the mission of the Lillehei Heart Institute by its funding of cardiovascular and respiratory research fellowships and grants to University of Minnesota faculty and students.
