Research
The Lillehei Heart Institute is a premier clinical and basic science research institute focusing on cardiovascular genomics, heart development, heart regeneration, stem cell therapies, personalized medicine, heart failure, vascular biology, and device design to treat cardiovascular diseases. In recent years we have established and recruited new research teams and have developed state-of-the-art research facilities that have resulted in a 250% increase in grant funding and large programmatic grants. This increase in staff and resources has allowed us to expand inter-disciplinary collaborations and synergies to promote new therapies.
ADVANCED PRECLINICAL IMAGING CENTER
The Advanced Preclinical Imaging Center (APIC) is a state-of-the-art innovative research facility within the Lillehei Heart Institute (LHI) of the University of Minnesota. It serves as a core translational laboratory and training facility to stimulate discovery and advancement in the fields of cardiovascular and neurological science, interventional radiology, and biomedical engineering. LILLEHEI CLINICAL RESEARCH UNIT
This innovative trials center conducts research in all aspects of cardiovascular disease and its prevention. We recruit study participants from Minnesota and nationally to help answer critical questions about new treatment modalities, innovative medical devices, and disease prevention strategies. Our University of Minnesota Cardiovascular faculty are leading experts within their sub-specialties, and bring that breadth of knowledge to cardiovascular research. Together with our Community Practice Cardiologists located at Fairview Southdale in Edina, MN, we have 50 Cardiologists participating in Clinical Trials. Learn More
THE VISIBLE HEART LABORATORY
LHI is proud to support The Visible Heart® Lab led by Paul Iaizzo, PhD. These labs are a premiere place to perform translational systems physiology research which ranges from cellular and tissue studies to organ and whole body investigations. The Visible Heart® Laboratories embody a creative atmosphere which is energized by some of the best and brightest students at the University. Its lab staff has over 100 years of collective research experience and functions as a highly efficient and productive team. Projects include 3D mapping of the individual human heart, translated into 3D-printed models and 3D virtual reality imaging of the heart.
