Minnesota offers a high quality of life for professionals and families. It consistently ranks near the top for health, fitness, happiness, safety, tolerance, education, affordability, and access to green space.

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is diligent in fostering excellence in teaching, research, and clinical service. We reach excellence through the vibrant exchange of ideas, which thrives when people from many backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and viewpoints collaborate. We uphold an environment of inclusivity, equal opportunity, and accessibility. We are committed to creating and maintaining an atmosphere where we celebrate similarities and differences, cultivate mutual respect and fuel intellectual growth.

As the department has continued to grow in size over the past few years, we have more patients, more research, and now, opportunities for additional psychiatrists and psychologists. Please view the opportunities below and follow the links to the full postings to apply. You may also submit your curriculum vitae to Sophia Vinogradov, M.D., Department Head at [email protected]

The mission of the Medical School is to be a leader in enhancing the health of people through innovative and diverse training experiences. Our medical students, residents, fellows, and psychology learners interact with a variety of medical educators to prepare for independent practice. The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences relies on the teaching skills of our adjunct faculty and faculty at affiliate locations to provide hands-on skill-building and exposure to real-world medical care.

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences has over 100 active adjunct faculty and faculty at affiliate locations.

Both adjunct faculty and faculty at affiliate locations volunteer their time to teaching learners. This teaching occurs in a wide variety of clinical settings, ranging from urban to suburban and rural offices, as well as large teaching hospitals. Teaching experiences include but are not limited to: leading didactic lectures to residents, psychotherapy supervision, supervise residency forensics rotations, supervise outpatient rotations, supervise upcoming Rural Track Consults in places such as at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, St. Cloud and our own.

Aside from the satisfaction of teaching receptive learners, adjunct faculty and faculty at affiliate locations receive numerous benefits and access to University resources. These include a University e-mail account, access to the extensive electronic resources of the Health Sciences Library, which include the current issues of almost all medical and scientific journals, as well as faculty discounts on University sports tickets, gym use, and computer software and hardware.

Adjunct Faculty or Faculty at an Affiliate Location?

Confusion often exists about what constitutes an Adjunct Faculty appointment or an appointment as a Faculty member at an Affiliate site. For both Adjunct and Faculty at affiliate location appointments, the academic contribution is a minimum of 46 hours per year. Faculty report their hours annually through an activity report. The Appointment Committee reviews the activity report for renewal.

For faculty at affiliate locations, their additional contributions can include the implementation of research programs that build on existing knowledge and translate information into practical applications. These faculty members participate in departmental committees and are voting members for promotion. They are expected to progress in their rank as they build their academic portfolio of professional work.

Adjunct Faculty:

  • Private Practice, including psychotherapy supervision
  • Non-Affiliate locations (Allina, HealthPartners, North Memorial, etc.)

Affiliate Locations:

  • Hennepin County Medical Center
  • VA Healthcare System
  • Regions Hospital
