We are a teaching facility affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School. Therefore, some or all of your care may be performed by a resident physician in psychiatry, an advanced psychiatric fellow or a psychology intern under the supervision and direction of a faculty psychiatrist, psychologist or supervising therapist. You may be asked to give permission for a medical student to observe or participate in your care. You may decline permission if you are in any way uncomfortable with this.
Organization of Patient Care
The organization of academic practice at the University of Minnesota is complex and designed to best serve our community through our three primary missions of patient care, resident education and research.
The delivery of patient care through physician and professional clinical services is part of the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP), a multispecialty group practice that supports the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Through a Joint Clinical Enterprise (JCE) with Fairview Health Services called “M Health”, the JCE manages inpatient and outpatient services offered at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC). These services are on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus and is the primary site for faculty outpatient care and resident and learner education. UMP and the University of Minnesota own clinics separate from Fairview, which also serve as sites for our services and teaching. In the structure of the JCE, clinics owned by UMP and outside the JCE are called Crescent locations. For our Department, Behavioral Health for Children and Families (BHCF), Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC), and Saint Louis Park (SLP) are crescent locations. UMP provides scheduling, billing, collection, contracting, compliance, clinical staff, and other central services to support the clinical practice.
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is a Clinical Service Unit (CSU) of UMP, as are the other clinical departments in the Medical School. The University of Minnesota does not own a hospital. The primary hospital practice site for our medical practice is UMMC. The hospitals at UMMC are part of the Fairview Health System, a private health care system in the greater Twin Cities region. UMMC is a two campus site, separated by the Mississippi River. The West Bank of UMMC is the primary site for the Department’s practice.
