Joanie Ducayet grew up with a brother who had disabilities. She witnessed the work her parents had to do to ensure that he lived the best life possible. That experience helped prepare her when her two sons, James, 24, and Ethan, 22, who had both been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) early in their lives, needed support in making the transition to adulthood.
A recently awarded National Institute of Mental Health grant of $1.7 million is enabling a U of M research team to test how well combining transcranial magnetic stimulation with the “gold standard” treatment will help young people with Tourette’s syndrome.
Dr. Gamze Çamsarı joined the faculty recently as an Assistant Professor after having practiced and taught for five years throughout the Mayo Clinic system. In her new role, she will be supporting the adult inpatient population at the M Health Fairview Riverside Clinic in Minneapolis, MN.
“We aim to be the premiere medical education laboratory in psychiatry in the country,” said Associate Professor Katharine (Kaz) Nelson, MD, about the recent launch of the department’s Psychiatric Education Research Lab (PERLab).
Dr. Elena Geiger-Simpson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UMN School of Nursing and a psychiatric nurse practitioner at the UMN Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic. Her patients come to her for the diagnosis and treatment of a range of mental health issues, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.
