THE FUTURE OF SURGERY
A Message from the Department Chair
The spirit of teamwork and excellence that defines us inspires me the most about our department. We work relentlessly to provide our patients the best possible care.
117 years ago, our department was founded to provide local surgical specialization for our region. This legacy of surgical science and innovation created the foundation for our department to become the leader in the academic and scientific surgery it is today. But none of the breakthroughs we achieve, the research we publish, and the patients' success stories we share with the community would be possible without you.

CLINICAL EXPERTISE →
In the early years, Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen, emphasized the importance of scientific research in medicine, a foundation that inspired pioneering surgeons to perform many of the world's 'firsts in breakthrough procedures that is our legacy.
We are constantly learning and evolving to provide exceptional care to the populations we serve.
We recognize that an integral part of that process is understanding the history, structures, and environments within our teams, facilities, and community. Our belief is that all individuals that we care for and work with experience esteem for their backgrounds, as well as support to advance and thrive within our institution.
Our mandate to inform the future of surgery demands a commitment to innovation and dedication to training the next generation of surgeon scientists. From hands-on research to in-depth graduate studies, we offer tailored track options to fit the career needs of tomorrow's leaders.
