Individualized Coaching
Are you constantly juggling conflicting clinical, research, and administrative priorities while feeling like there is never enough time in the day? Stop merely surviving your workload and start actively shaping your career trajectory. This bi-annual Individualized Coaching Program provides faculty with a confidential, structured space for deep self-reflection and actionable change.
Unlike traditional departmental mentoring, which often focuses primarily on tactical advancement, this coaching program is structured to help faculty cultivate self-awareness, improve prioritization, manage time, and proactively plan their careers.
Areas of Focus
The program is most effective when faculty approach it with a clear, specific focus area. Coaches are equipped to help faculty navigate a variety of professional challenges and development goals, including:
- Time Management & Prioritization: Setting boundaries, managing heavy workloads, and prioritizing tasks with less guilt.
- Interpersonal & Workplace Dynamics: Navigating interactions with Department Chairs, leadership, or colleagues, and managing difficult professional relationships.
- Imposter Syndrome & Confidence: Overcoming self-doubt and cultivating professional self-awareness.
- Career Advancement & Direction: Engaging in proactive career planning, preparing for promotion discussions, or evaluating new job opportunities.
- Balancing Conflicting Priorities: Harmonizing clinical, research, administrative, and personal commitments.
Program Structure & Time Commitment
- Cohort Schedule: The program runs in two cycles per academic year (Fall and Spring).
- Capacity: To ensure individualized attention, capacity is limited to 9 to 12 faculty members per cycle.
- Session Structure: Participants will engage in 6 to 8 personalized coaching sessions. The first two sessions are scheduled bi-weekly to build momentum and establish goals, followed by monthly sessions to allow ample time for reflection and the implementation of behavioral changes.
- Assessment Tools: Participants have the option to utilize the Hogan Assessment Flash report at the start of their coaching. This scientifically validated psychometric test evaluates workplace performance and leadership potential by measuring traits like ambition, sociability, and prudence.
The program is supported by three certified, highly experienced University of Minnesota faculty coaches. Each coach works with 3 to 4 coachees per cohort to ensure a high-quality experience:
- Barbara Gold, MD, MHCM, Professor, Department of Anesthesiology (Coaching Bio)
- David Ingbar, MD, Professor, Department of Medicine (Coaching Bio)
- Catherine McCarty, PhD, MPH, HEC-C, Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health (Coaching Bio)
Faculty need a safe environment to discuss challenges openly. All coaching sessions are strictly confidential.
The program is open to faculty of all ranks (Assistant, Associate, and full Professor) and all tracks (Clinician, Academic, and Tenure).
Because coaching requires active participation, applicants will be screened for coaching "readiness". Successful candidates will demonstrate an openness to self-reflection and a willingness to actively test small, tangible changes in their everyday behavior between sessions.
