The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) Experiential Learning Program (ELP) will visit Experimental Surgical Services (ESS) on January 29-30, 2024 - a significant honor for the research center, which applied for the opportunity in September 2023.

ELP is a state-of-the-art learning opportunity CDRH offers for new and experienced CDRH staff. The program aims to educate FDA CDRH reviewers in the medical device research process by showing them what occurs just before reviewers see the devices before them for approval of first-in-human trials.

Through ELP, CDRH staff can participate in training visits to help close knowledge gaps between emerging and innovative technology and the pre-market review of the resulting medical device.

These formal site visits give CDRH staff more knowledge of:

  • Products they review
  • Product development
  • The voice of the patient
  • Challenges related to quality systems development and management in the product life cycle
  • How medical devices fit into the larger healthcare system

The upcoming visit provides an excellent opportunity to promote an academic research environment as the perfect setting for this type of research.

Congratulations to our ESS faculty and staff on being selected for this notable opportunity!
