In a pioneering new study, Professor in the Division of Transplantation Dr. Erik Finger, Dr. Joseph Sushil Rao, and a team of researchers perform the first successful transplant of a functional cryopreserved rat kidney.

The research, published in Nature Communications, could save thousands of human lives by enabling long-term storage of organs for transplantation.

"During the first two to three weeks, the kidneys weren't at full function, but by three weeks, they recovered. By one month, they were fully functioning kidneys that were completely indistinguishable from transplants of a fresh organ," said the study's co-senior author Erik Finger, MD, PhD.
