Announcing Dr. Syed Murfad Peer as Associate Professor of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

We are pleased to announce that Murfad Peer, MD, will be joining us as Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School and the M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital on July 29, 2022. 

 

Dr. Peer joins us from Children’s National Hospital, Washington, D.C., where his practice included the entire spectrum of congenital heart surgeries from neonates to adult congenital heart disease. Dr. Peer’s clinical interests are early primary repair of congenital heart defects and surgical therapy for pediatric heart failure.

 

After completing his basic medical and surgical training in India, Dr. Peer moved to the United States to pursue his passion for congenital heart surgery. In the U.S., he had the opportunity to be mentored by the ‘Who’s Who’ of congenital heart surgery, namely Richard Jonas, MD at Washington, D.C., Edward Bove, MD, Richard Ohye, MD at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Anthony Azakie, MD at the University of Minnesota. At the University of Michigan, Dr. Peer further trained in surgical treatment for advanced heart failure with yet another pioneer in the field, Francis Pagani, MD. He is one of the few pediatric heart surgeons in the country with formal advanced training in heart transplantation and ventricular assist device therapy. Having worked with luminaries and leaders in the field, Dr. Peer understands what it takes to be an exceptional congenital heart surgeon.

 

Dr. Peer is also a passionate basic science researcher and an innovator. He has done extensive research on mechanical support of the single ventricle circulation both in an animal model and computer simulations. Dr. Peer is also interested in designing and developing pediatric cardiovascular medical devices. In collaboration with the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, Washington, D.C., he is currently working on developing a pediatric chest compression device for use during extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR). Dr. Peer has published extensively in the field of congenital heart surgery and has made several presentations at national and international meetings. Dr. Peer is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery. He is a peer reviewer for several international journals.

 

Dr. Peer believes that operating on a child’s heart is a privilege and a great responsibility. He is passionate about his work and considers it an honor to be able to participate in the care of patients.
