The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is one of the largest gynecological cancer programs in the Midwest and is part of the clinical and research program of the Masonic Cancer Center, a comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute. As a clinical and academic division, we are focused on scientific studies that advance cancer care and identify the best approaches for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Together with our University and community clinical partners, we provide a wide range of clinical services for the evaluation and treatment of premalignant and invasive cancer of the ovary, cervix, endometrium, and vulva.  Our doctors have extensive experience managing all types of cases and work in partnership with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pain and palliative care specialists, advanced practice providers and oncology nurses to treat the whole person, not just the disease.

Patient Care

A cancer diagnosis can be frightening, saddening and overwhelming. Women with gynecologic cancer are faced with many medical decisions as well as psychological and family concerns. Our physicians are uniquely trained to support women every step of the way during their cancer diagnosis and treatment.  We know you need more than expert advice; you need a partner who can explain your treatment plan in an easy to understand way. We’re more than just your physician; we provide compassionate care, attentiveness and a full range of treatment options to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Education

Education

Our faculty members are driven by the mission to teach and mentor residents and fellows and by their commitment to advancing knowledge and improving care for women with gynecologic cancers. For graduates considering a career in gynecologic oncology, we offer a variety of interdisciplinary educational opportunities at all levels within the division, affording scholars and clinicians the opportunity to learn about various issues surrounding research and clinical treatment of conditions related to gynecologic cancers. Residents and fellows attend weekly education conferences and monthly Journal Clubs to complete their didactic experiences. Resident experiences also include ambulatory and inpatient care and include diagnostic procedures, gyn-oncology surgeries, and end of life care. Our ABOG accredited gynecologic oncology fellowship program is a three-year program designed to train physicians who have completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Fellows complete two years of clinical/surgical rotations and one year of research during the gynecologic oncology fellowship training program.

Research

Research

Clinical research is core to the gynecologic oncology mission. It’s also what sets us apart from other health care centers. The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is actively involved in a number of institutional research studies and sponsored clinical trials through the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and National Cancer Institute endorsed trials. We work very closely with the Masonic Cancer Center to grow our clinical research efforts while increasing translational endpoints. The gynecologic oncology program has consistently been one of the groups that have accrued the highest number of subjects to adult solid tumor clinical trials. Our new state-of-the-art Clinics and Surgery Center was designed to accommodate research and it is an opportunity for patients to be part of the process of innovation and discovery. Not only are thousands of people helped each year because they decide to take part in a clinical trial; but there are millions more who benefit from others’ participation in clinical trials.
