Education

Education

The Division of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Midwifery and Family Planning is responsible for training University of Minnesota medical students for their ObGyn clerkship, and residents in continuity clinics, labor and delivery and in the operating room. Our Ryan Residency Training Program provides clinical training in comprehensive women's reproductive health care and residents are exposed to high patient volumes at two community clinics serviced by our faculty. Certified Nurse-Midwives and advanced practice nurses are also part of the academic mission and actively teach Ob/Gyn residents, medical students and nurse practitioner students. The primary focus in this division is to provide a strong nucleus for resident education in general obstetrics and gynecology and primary women's health care.

Research

Research

The Ob/Gyn Generalists division is invested in basic and clinical research efforts that benefit patients through improved patient care processes and health care outcomes. Current research studies include learning more about the effectiveness of Vitamin D supplementation in the prevention of gestational diabetes and evaluating whether wearing a mouthguard during the second stage of labor reduces the duration and intensity of pushing. We actively lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives that look at systematic ways of improving the quality, efficiency, and safety for women receiving care in our clinics and/or maternity care programs.
