Year in Review: Our Top Stories in 2023

There is always a supply of news in the Department of Surgery. Whether we're celebrating milestones such as Match Day or graduation, announcing funding for an innovative study, or sharing how our team is delivering compassionate care in the Twin Cities and globally, a story is always waiting to be told. 

This year, we're sharing a Top Ten list of which stories captured your interest most, so read on and reminisce on an exceptional year made possible because of all of you. 


10. Meet Our New Fellow! 2023 Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program Match

In May 2023, we were excited to announce Ary Dotiwala, MD, as our new fellow in the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program beginning in August 2024. 

9. Experimental: The Jamie Fiske Story, Forty Years Later

In 1982, 11-month-old Jamie Fiske changed the world. She was not expected to reach her first birthday with a failing liver in an era when organ transplantation was only experimental. Forty years later, Jamie Fiske stands as a living testament to the skill of Najarian and the U of M Liver Transplant Program.

8. Research Spotlight: Dr. Zhang Received an R01 Renewal Developing Novel AI Approach to Mine Effective & Safe Use of Dietary Supplements

In early 2023, Founding Division Chief of Computational Health Sciences, Dr. Rui Zhang, was awarded an R01 renewal to develop a first-of-its-kind informatics framework for reducing improper dietary supplement use.

7. Meet Our New Cohort! Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship Program

In May, we were delighted to welcome two outstanding new fellows, Drs. Rachel Schenkel and Atli Valgardsson, to our Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship program beginning on August 1, 2024. 

6. Tuskegee University Scholars Collaboration Reflection 2023

With the end of summer came the close of another incredible eight-week medical immersion experience for our Tuskegee University undergraduate scholars. 

This remarkable cohort spent the summer participating in clinical rotations, shadowing in the operating room, working on faculty-sponsored research projects, engaging in educational seminars, and experiencing all the Twin Cities offers. 

5. Surgical Education Office Announces Leadership Changes

2023 brought leadership changes to The Surgical Education Office, and in January, we were pleased to announce Dr. Randi Lassiter as the new UME Surgery Clerkship Director. 

4. Celebrate With Us - March Is Women's History Month

We were proud to spend March celebrating and sharing more about the achievements of the accomplished women in the Department of Surgery, from Dr. Nancy Ascher to today's faculty. 

3. Division of Vascular Surgery Announces Interim Head & Program Director for Vascular Fellowship and Residency

When Dr. Amy Reed announced that she would be leaving the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians on July 21, 2023, we were very grateful to share that Dr. Derrick Green had agreed to serve as interim division chief of vascular and endovascular surgery as well as director of vascular services.

2. Congratulations, Class of 2023, General Surgery Residents!

The General Surgery Residency Program hosted its graduation ceremony at the Weisman Art Museum on June 27, 2023.  The hybrid event featured inspiring speeches, awards, and recognition of outstanding achievements.

The beginning of spring signals the announcement of new residents, and we were thrilled to welcome our new residents as they celebrated Match Day and began to look to the future with the Department of Surgery.
