The Division of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Midwifery & Family Planning takes an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to women's health, offering complete gynecologic care for women of all ages from adolescence through your senior years. We're redefining the doctor-patient relationship to one where patients are more actively engaged in the decison-making process for their treatment and continued care. Simply put, we combine science-based medicine and alternative options in a holistic setting to achieve better health outcomes and help women meet personal health goals. Our skilled and dedicated team of health care providers is committed to providing compassionate, respectful and non-judgemental care to women of all ages, while being fully committed to training the next generation of physicians, certified-nurse midwives and nurse practitioners in women's health.
The Division of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Midwifery and Family Planning is responsible for training University of Minnesota medical students for their ObGyn clerkship, and residents in continuity clinics, labor and delivery and in the operating room. Our Ryan Residency Training Program provides clinical training in comprehensive women's reproductive health care and residents are exposed to high patient volumes at two community clinics serviced by our faculty. Certified Nurse-Midwives and advanced practice nurses are also part of the academic mission and actively teach Ob/Gyn residents, medical students and nurse practitioner students. The primary focus in this division is to provide a strong nucleus for resident education in general obstetrics and gynecology and primary women's health care.
Our first-class team of health care providers are specialists in women's health, focusing on the whole person and making use of all therapeutic approaches and disciplines available so you can make the most of your life and achieve optimal health and well-being. Our interdisciplinary team includes Obstetricians/Gynecologists, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine physicians, Certified Nurse-Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists and Pharmacists who come together to create a unique model of integrative care, combining conventional western medicine with alternative or complementary treatments. We provide a wide range of care, from health maintenance and healthy pregnancy care to treating more complex conditions including cervical dysplasia, pelvic pain and high-risk pregnancy. Our physicians maintain expertise in cutting-edge surgical techniques including advanced laparoscopy and robotically-assisted vaginal hysterectomies. We've created a women-centered environment and work with you to develop a comprehensive preventive and/or treatment plan for the best possible outcome.
The Ob/Gyn Generalists division is invested in basic and clinical research efforts that benefit patients through improved patient care processes and health care outcomes. Current research studies include learning more about the effectiveness of Vitamin D supplementation in the prevention of gestational diabetes and evaluating whether wearing a mouthgard during the second stage of labor reduces the duration and intensity of pushing. We actively lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives that look at systematic ways of improving the quality, efficiency, and safety for women receiving care in our clinics and/or maternity care programs. For more information about research studies being conducted in OB/GYN, contact Lauren Asfaw.
