The Department of Surgery offers comprehensive residency programs and surgery fellowships in several different specialty areas, ranging from cardiothoracic surgery, surgical critical care, to vascular surgery and more.

Basic & Translational Sciences Laboratory

Our robust research program provides our residents and faculty the opportunity to participate in scientific discovery and clinical innovation. We have a rich history of renowned basic and clinical science research, distinguishing ourselves as an academic and clinical center of excellence.

*University of Minnesota graduate students who are hired as Graduate Assistants in the Department of Surgery are paid a minimum hourly rate of $27.95.

This grant awards Mizuho Dahlman, PhD, with $25K for one year for her research titled, "Oncolytic Adenovirus for Colon Cancer as Viro-Immunotherapy."

The General Surgery Residency Program hosted its graduation ceremony at McNamara Alumni Center in Memorial Hall on June 26, 2026. The event featured speeches, awards, and recognition of outstanding achievements.

The Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Tina Bharani, MD, as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Transplantation.

This award will support the development of trustworthy AI technologies for ophthalmology and help advance earlier identification of patients at high risk for vision loss.
