Leadership

Our residency program promotes a collaborative and innovative environment where residents are empowered to take active roles in leadership and the continuous improvement of their educational experience. Through multiple resident-led committees and leadership opportunities, trainees work closely with program leadership to advocate for their peers, shape program initiatives, and drive meaningful change within the residency.

Each graduating chief class has two Administrative Chief Residents who are selected through an application process by program leadership. Administrative Chiefs work closely with the Program Director and Surgical Education Office to support resident advocacy, program development, and operational leadership within the residency. Serving as key liaisons between residents and leadership, they help communicate resident perspectives, guide departmental initiatives, and foster a collaborative and positive training environment.

The Resident Leadership Council (RLC) is composed of peer-elected representatives from each PGY level. Representatives serve as both advocates for their co-residents and ambassadors of program initiatives within their class and work closely with the Administrative Chief Residents. RLC meets regularly throughout the year to discuss topics impacting residency training, identify opportunities for improvement, and help develop agendas for meetings between residents and program leadership. RLC members are expected to maintain open communication with their peers, provide updates on ongoing initiatives, and participate in the development and implementation of solutions that support continuous program improvement. The Council emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and closed-loop communication to ensure resident feedback meaningfully informs program evolution.

The Rotation Review Committee includes 1–2 residents from each PGY level and focuses on the ongoing assessment and refinement of the residency clinical curriculum. Through structured review of clinical rotations, committee members evaluate strengths, identify opportunities for improvement, and provide feedback regarding resident experience, educational value, workflow, and staffing needs. This committee also plays a key role in helping optimize rotation structure as the program continues to expand.

The Educational Improvement Committee is a group focused on advancing the educational experience within the residency program. The committee consists of a core group of junior and senior residents who collaborate on curriculum development, educational innovation, simulation initiatives, wellness efforts, and other programmatic improvements. Membership rotates longitudinally to encourage broad resident involvement and diverse perspectives in shaping the future of surgical education within the program.

Two residents serve as Recruitment and Engagement Resident Chairs, providing leadership in fostering community, connection, and resident wellness within the General Surgery Residency Program. They support resident recruitment efforts by collaborating with program leadership on interview events, outreach initiatives, and promotion of the residency program. The chairs oversee resident-driven social media and engagement activities that showcase resident experiences, achievements, and program culture. Through outreach, recruitment, and ongoing evaluation of engagement initiatives, they help cultivate an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environment for current and future residents.
